Near the intersection of Donaldson and Blair Circle is our Community Garden. The Garden is an initiative of the Friends of Blackburn Park with the mission to strengthen community; enable the cultivation and consumption of wholesome, homegrown food; provide an environment for hands-on education; to foster an intergenerational gardening experience and to enhance the beauty of our neighborhood green space. We rent raised beds for gardening and have also dedicated garden beds for donating fresh produce to charity food panties; donating 340 pounds in 2021.
We participate in the Worldwide Daffodil Project that aspires to build a worldwide Living Holocaust Memorial by planting 1.5 million Daffodils in memory of the children who perished in the Holocaust and in support for children suffering in humanitarian crises in the world today.
We have recently planted a pollinator garden to attract bees and butterflies which are essential to creating and maintaining the habitats and ecosystems that many animals rely on for food and shelter. Worldwide, over half the diet of fats and oils comes from crops pollinated by animals and they facilitate the reproduction in 90% of the world's flowering plants.
